VE Examinations
Volunteer Examiner (VE) exam sessions are sponsored locally by the Cross Keys
Village Amateur Radio Club (CKVARC). CKVARC uses the Laurel Volunteer
Examination Coordinator (Laurel
VEC). There is no fee to take the exam and Laurel VEC processes
exams very quickly - new callsigns or upgrades are usually in the FCC database
by the following Tuesday.
- Exams are given on the third Saturday of odd numbered months at 9:30am
in the Harmony Ridge Community Center at Cross Keys Village, New Oxford,
PA [map]
- You need an email address and an FCC Registration Number (FRN). If you
already have an Amateur Radio license, then your FRN is printed on the
license. If you are getting a license for the first time, then you can
get an FRN by going to https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/
and clicking on the Register link under Need a Username?
- Preregistration is required to take an exam. Register using this
online registration form. Registrations received later than one
week before the session may not be accepted. If there is at least one
registrant who registered before the one week cutoff, then we will hold
the session and new registrations will be accepted until the Friday
before the session.
- As of April 19, 2022 the FCC charges a $35 fee for new licenses
(upgrades are free). This fee is non-refundable if there is an error in
the application. The CKVARC VE team strives to keep informed of FCC
rules and requirements, and provide the best service we can. We are
proud of our record and rarely make errors that could result in
additional FCC fees. However, we are a volunteer organization that
charges no fees to take our exams and has no income. We cannot be
financially responsible for fees that result from any VEC or VE team errors.
- Email
ckvarc.ve.testing@gmail.com if you have any questions.
What to bring to an exam
- A photo ID (driver's license, passport, military ID, school photo ID).
- If no photo ID is available, then bring two forms of identification
(non-photo state ID, birth certificate, social security card, utility
bill, bank statement, paycheck statement, library card).
- Minors who are accompanied by a legal guardian with photo ID are only
required to have one non-photo ID as specified above.
- If applicable, bring a printed copy of your Amateur Radio license.
- If applicable, bring originals of any Certificates of Successful
Completion of an Examination (CSCE) for any exam credits that you
hold. This is not needed if your FCC license has already been issued
for the examination credit.
- Bring two, or more, number two pencils, eraser, and a pen (blue ink
is preferred).
- You may bring a calculator. If it is a programmable calculator, then
you must demonstrate to the VE examiners that the memory has been
cleared. You may not use a calculator app on your phone. All phones
should be silenced or turned off during the examination.
